Message from the President

I am pleased to report that phenological observations in our neighboring country to the north should soon greatly increase, as a national network is now being implemented there. This is a natural expansion of a current program, Plantwatch.

Plantwatch originally budded from a program called the Alberta Wildflower Survey, which was started by Elisabeth Beaubien in 1987. In 1995, realizing the great potential of a wider-reaching program, she led the effort to create Plantwatch. Since its launch seven years ago, Plantwatch has attracted observers from all over Canada, the United States, and Europe. Plantwatch Canada now has a regional coordinator in each province and territory across the country. This spring a new national Plantwatch web site will be launched across Canada by the Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network Coordinating Office (EMAN CO) of Environment Canada. At this new web site, people will be able to click on a specific province or territory to connect to its survey and its list of plant species. There will be plant descriptions with full-color photos, and many other useful items. The current Plantwatch web site (http://www.devonian.ualberta.ca/pwatch) will become the Alberta Plantwatch site, with links to EMAN’s national web site. I am optimistic that with these developments in Canada, momentum is building for the launching of a similar national phenological network in the USA. I hope to report progress on that frontier next year.

Also, we have made an effort to send this newsletter to anyone who has been a member of the Society at anytime during the last five years. If your “dues status” (on the data reporting form) says “expired” please consider renewing your dues and becoming an active member. Your financial support of the Society is greatly appreciated, and your observations are extremely useful to the scientific community.

President

2002 Natural History Workshops
at the UWM Field Station

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Field Station conducts a series of Natural History Workshops.  These workshops offer an opportunity to study focused topics at college-level instruction under the guidance of noted authorities.   Most workshops present two full days of instruction, and housing and meals are available at the Station.  Enrollment is limited to 20; the atmosphere is informal and instruction is individualized.

Workshops may be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit by enrolling in UWM, Topics in Field Biology.  Fees vary.  Please contact the Field Station (see below) for more information and a registration form, or visit our website at www.uwm.edu/Dept/fieldstation for full descriptions of each course, fee information, and a downloadable Registration Form.  The 2002 workshop schedule includes six courses:

Phenology on the World Wide Web:

The world around us tends to change with noticeable attention to the seasons. It’s not always the same with technology—there’s always something new coming into existence. These two worlds can and do meet, however. Proof is in these websites regarding phenology:
