PRESCRIBED FIRE BURN SCHOOL: TWO-DAY
WORKSHOP
AT the Black Earth Education and Retreat Facility

This two-day course will cover the ecology of fire, fire
behavior principles, and the elements of fire management
planning, focusing on prairie and savanna ecosystems.
Participants will operate basic fire management tools, view the
layout and preparation of a fire unit, and, weather permitting,
conduct several burns. This course will enhance understanding of
fire for landowners and resource managers, and is equivalent to
a basic crew member training by the Wisconsin Prescribed Fire
Council. This workshop is not a NWCG S-130/190 certification
course.
This program is co-sponsored by the Aldo Leopold Foundation’s
Woodland School. For specific questions on the content of the

EMERALD ASH BORER FIELD WORKSHOP
AT the Black Earth Education and Retreat Facility

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive beetle that could be the
next big threat to the health of Wisconsin’s forests. Join Anna
Healy, Plant Pest and Disease Specialist for the Wisconsin
Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, for an
introduction to EAB identification and survey. This workshop
will familiarize participants with the biology and life history
of the EAB, the extent of infestation in North America, past and
current survey efforts in Wisconsin, and how to distinguish EAB
from native beetles. The afternoon will be conducted in the
field surveying the site for ash trees and may include a tree
peeling demonstration. This workshop is perfect for landowners,
resource professionals, land steward volunteers, educators, and
anyone with an interest in combating invasive species in
Wisconsin.
All necessary personal protective equipment will be supplied and
morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. This program is
sponsored by an Urban Forestry Grant from the Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources and is co-presented by the Aldo
Leopold Foundation’s Woodland School.

WILDERNESS FIRST AID: TWO-DAY
CERTIFICATION COURSE
AT the Black Earth Education and Retreat Facility
Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4, 2008

Are you prepared to handle an emergency medical situation when
dialing 911 is not an option? This Wilderness Medical Associates
course will teach you how! Wilderness medicine differs
significantly from standard first aid courses that are oriented
toward the urban environment. This is a great course for outdoor
educators, youth adventure leaders, parents, and anyone who
spends time in the backcountry. Instructional sessions will be
held indoors and outdoors. Lodging in a 3-story cabin and space
for tent camping are available on-site for an additional
$10/night. Meals are on your own with a full kitchen available.
Class size is limited so please register early! Students must be
at least 16 years of age. Participants under 18 must have proof
of parental consent to participate. This program is co-presented
with Rutabaga Paddlesports.

Teacher Workshops
LEOPOLD EDUCATION PROJECT –
ADVANCED TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP

The Leopold Education Project is an innovative environmental
education curriculum based on essays from A Sand County Almanac,
written by renowned conservationist, Aldo Leopold. This workshop
expands upon previous techniques included in the basic LEP
course, featuring new and fun ways to teach students and adults
about our close ties to the environment. Participants will learn
how to use the natural world to teach science, math, social
studies and history to meet Wisconsin Academic Standards, using
new, fun tricks of the trail to teach core subjects.
This workshop welcomes returning LEP participants as well as
those new to LEP. Lessons in the course are designed for
4th-12th grade educators (science, language arts, math, art,
history), non-formal educators, natural resource professionals,
4-H and Scout leaders, conservation leaders and anyone
interested in learning more about fostering a relationship
between our youth and the natural world. Each participant will
receive a wealth of materials that are easy to use with both
adults and youth. Morning refreshments and lunch will be
provided. This program is co-sponsored by the Dane County
Chapter of Pheasants Forever.

BIRDS ON THE WING TWO-DAY TEACHER
WORKSHOP
Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Ever recognize the wonder of a bird on the wing and ask yourself
how you could teach about such wonderful creatures and still
meet Wisconsin Academic standards? This two-day workshop,
designed for educators of middle school students, will show you
how by introducing two curricula: One Bird – Two Habitats and
Flying WILD. Participants will receive bird education materials,
engage in outdoor field activities, and learn how to meet
standards using environmental education techniques, Cooperative
Learning, and Service Learning models. Morning refreshments and
lunch will be provided.

The Alexander Studio, with its large meeting space, cathedral
ceilings, circular performance platform, and outdoor deck, is a
perfect site for educational programs, meetings and workshops.
The three-story Lodge, with its wraparound porch, stone
fireplace and rustic furnishings, is the ideal spot for small
group educational programs, meetings and retreats.
