Overnights
Overnights can be held at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center at either the Monona or Black Earth campuses. Three overnight options exist (see below for descriptions). Activities include a badge work, night hike, nighttime snack around the campfire, and light breakfast. For more information, to view a sample schedule, or set up your overnight program, call (608) 221-4038.

Overnight Program Options:
Cub Camping (Single night overnight-7pm-11:00am): $250 minimum ($25/scout); 2 troop leaders free, each additional adult $10/each; 24 scouts max

Scout Slumber (All day/overnight-9am-11am): $400 minimum ($40/scout); 2 troop leaders free, each additional adult $10/each; 24 scouts max

Overnight Adventure(Weekend/Two-night overnight-7pm-9am): $500 minimum;
($50/scout); 2 troop leaders free, each additional adult $10/each; 24 scouts max

Explore the prairie, wetlands, and forest for evidence of animal tracks, trails, homes, and hangouts in this dual Try-It badge opportunity! Meet some real animals up close to learn how they move, communicate, and where they live. Investigate different types of animal shelters, food sources, adaptations and behaviors of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and more!

Junior Girl Scouts explore the parts of our lives made possible by plants and animals. The connections that link plants and animals are stronger than you can imagine. Did you know that squirrels are as important to oak trees as the trees are to the squirrels? Some birds’ beaks are strong enough to crack open a nut while other birds’ beaks would break trying! Learn why some plants cause problems while others are helpful.

Aldo Leopold was inspired by nature to write, draw, journal, and share with others his respect and admiration for the natural world. Join us to make a nature journal, draw natural objects, and capture a piece of nature. We’ll learn songs, weave poetry, and share our creations in a special ceremony in the Shack. We’ll also help the habitats of ALNC by conducting a small service project.

Environmental Health (Junior Girl Scouts)

Chase away the winter blues and let your inner diva “shine” with a “sun-sational” fashion show to music! We’ll explore personal and environmental health as we learn about the indoor and outdoor pollution that leads to asthma attacks and learn about serious environmental hazards, like lead poisoning. We’ll burn some energy by playing the “Block the Spread of Lead” Relay, then refuel by snacking on those delicious lead blockers! Finally, we’ll use an ice auger to explore the frozen pond, collect water samples and discuss options for keeping our lakes and rivers clean and pure.

Walk like a lynx on snowshoes to track rabbits and other prey! We’ll learn how Wisconsin’s mammals adapt to the harsh winter environment. Daisies will meet true hibernators like the groundhog, deep sleepers such as the chipmunk and those active all winter long, like the fox! Then we’ll strap on snowshoes to search the trails for signs of wildlife wintering in the woods. If no snow is present, we will hike to observe animal signs on foot. (Snowshoes provided by REI; you must specify scout’s WEIGHT when registering).

Winter fun is all around, but being smart and prepared is essential to the enjoyment of any winter activity. Scouts will learn how to stay safe outdoors in Wisconsin’s winters and find out how our animal neighbors survive. Become a nature detective as you hike to look for animal tracks and signs!

Brownies earn their Prairie Magic Try-It Badge by exploring ALNC’s prairie! Learn the special adaptations of prairie plants, identify the plants and animals that live in the prairie, and create a “Prairie Restaurant” food chain! In keeping with the “It’s Your Earth – Love It!” Girl Scout theme, Brownies will participate in a service project to help remove invasive plants from the prairie or to help prepare our bird boxes for returning migrators!

Learn the special fire adaptations to Midwestern prairies! Without fire, prairies quickly transform into savannas and finally into woodlands. We’ll explore the prairie-fire connection while searching for signs of the coming spring. In keeping with the “It’s Your Earth – Love It!” Girl Scout theme, we’ll participate in a service project to remove invasive plants or help prepare our bird boxes for returning migrators!

Eco-Action & Planet Power – Dual Interest Patch (Senior/Cadette Girl Scouts)

Become part of the solution while earning your Eco-Action and Planet Power Interest Patches! We’ll begin by conducting an “energy audit” of the Nature Center building (including alternative energy systems), then explore ways to conserve energy and reduce waste. Give scrap paper a whole new life by making recycled paper to take home! We’ll discover how energy moves through nature from producers to consumers to decomposers, then simulate the process by adding food waste to a built compost bin! We’ll role play what environmental scientists, educators and chemists do as we investigate the water quality of our pond by conducting a “Biotic Index” and performing chemical tests. Finally we’ll put our knowledge and skills to good use by conducting a service project to improve the wildlife habitat at ALNC.

Space Exploration/Digging Through the Past – Dual Badge (Senior/Cadette Girl Scouts)

Fee: $30 per scout/$10 per adult (Adult supervision not necessary)
Registration Deadline: Tuesday, March 30, 2010 Limit: 24 scouts
This overnight experience will allow scouts to earn 2 badges under the stars on trails that lead to rock outcroppings missed by the glaciers! We’ll learn about astronomical phenomena, the sun and moon’s relationship to the earth, design flying objects and make maps of the constellations! After breakfast in the Lodge, we’ll hike to explore unique geologic formations and archaeological artifacts. From the importance of good tools and safety to the proper techniques for “reading” an artifact, scouts will learn the secrets of an archaeologist and use them on a simulated “dig.” Experiments will demonstrate the effects of weathering on rocks and soils through friction, heat, cold, wind, plants, acid rain and other processes. (Friday campfire snack included).

Trailside Backpack Program

Enhance your troop's exploration of nature with our Trailside Backpack Program! ALNC offers three seasonally themed backpacks containing easy-to-understand Exploration Guides and a host of tools to help your troop investigate and discover. Backpack activities may be used with scouts of all ages. Our seasonal themes are Spring is in the Air (spring), Crawling Critters (summer) and Snug in the Snow (winter). We also have a Fabulous Forests backpack perfect for your troop's autumn adventure! The Fabulous Forests backpack was produced under a 2003-03 grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board. Backpacks were generously donated by REI.
