Forests are important ecosystems in the United States and throughout the world. Scouts will explore the relationship between plants, water and photosynthesis and investigate the effects of environmental conditions on tree growth. We’ll discuss the relationship between climate and phenology and the predicted effects of global warming on Wisconsin’s forests. In keeping with the “It’s Your World – Change It” theme, we’ll complete a service project to help keep the Nature Center’s forests healthy! After lunch, we’ll connect what we learned about forests and expand it to the entire forest ecosystem. We’ll study soil and the layers of the forest, see ecological succession first hand, play some eco games, and learn about the adaptations of plants and animals in the pond, prairie and forest.

We’ll also experiment with how certain scents make us feel and create lotion using essential oils and scents derived from nature. Learn about noise pollution and escape it by spending some time in our replica of Aldo Leopold’s shack where he wrote his famous book,
A Sand County Almanac. We’ll read some of his nature inspired book together and spend time creating our own nature journals. Back inside, we’ll test out experiments with air (the mass, make-up, pressure in air and in water) and do the famous “Collapsing Milk Jug” experiment! We’ll end the day by making our own eco-friendly cleaning supplies to bring home to be sure the air in our homes is as clean and healthy as it can be.
