Nature Net's Eco-Treks Through MSCR

What is an Eco-Trek

Explore and learn with guided tours, hikes and walks at various Nature Net locations. Offered throughout the summer, Eco-Treks give your family the opportunity to get a VIP, hands-on experience at each site with skilled guides and naturalists.  Sign up for one or many and enjoy outdoor adventuring all summer long.

Calendar of Eco-Treks
  • Wildflower Wander at Aldo Leopold Nature Center 
    Sunday 5/6 1:30-3 pm $5 
    This easy trek will introduce spectacular spring Wisconsin wildflowers to the whole family!  You'll discover how to recognize some floral families, learn the story behind wildflower names, and uncover some historical used of each wildflower by Native Americans and pioneers!  Trails can be muddy in the spring, so wear boots or old shoes that can get dirty.

  • Cherokee Marsh Marvels 
    Saturday 5/12 9-10:30 am $5
    Visit the largest marsh in Dane County and take a tour through naturalist Nancy Fonzen's favorite bogs, fens, and cattail marshes. Catch a glimpse of local wildlife and learn some local lore and natural history.

  • Aldo Leopold Farm & Shack Tour at Aldo Leopold Foundation near Baraboo 
    Saturday 5/19 9-10:30 am $5
    The Shack, a re-built chicken coop along the Wisconsin River where the Leopold family stayed during weekend retreats, continues to serve as the heart of the Foundation’s programs. Visit the land surrounding the Shack which provides a living classroom for exploring dynamic ecological relationships. Be one of the thousands of visitors who are inspired through tours, seminars, and workshops in the same landscape that deeply moved Leopold.

  • Lake Farm Park & Heritage Center Tour 
    Sunday 6/3 10-11:30 am $5
    The Lussier Family Heritage Center provides an environment that supports and encourages the discovery of the history, culture, and resources of the Dane County Region, the Nine Springs E-Way, and Lake Farm County Park through recreation, interactive programs, special events, and interpretation. Come take a guided tour of the area and discover for yourself the diverse and beautiful lands.

  • Fishing Family Fun at Aldo Leopold Nature Center 
    Sunday 6/17 9:30 am-12 pm $7
    Fishing is fun for the whole family in this introduction to angling.  You'll see examples of different types of rods and reels, play the "Backyard Bass" fishing game to practice casting, learn about fly fishing rods and how to cast them, and catch worms to use a a bait as you fish in the Aldo Leopold pond. Fishing equipment provided.

  • UW Geology Museum Family Tour 
    Tuesday 7/17 3-4:30 pm $5
    Explore the Geology Museum and take a peek into Wisconsin's deep history! On your visit you can touch rocks from a time when there were volcanoes in Wisconsin; see corals, jellyfish and other sea creatures that used to live and swim where we now walk; and stand under the tusks of a mastodon while imagining yourself in the Ice Age.  Also on display at the Geology Museum are rocks and minerals that glow, a model of a Wisconsin cave, dinosaurs and meteorites. The UW Geology Museum's mineral, rock and fossil collections have the power to educate and inspire visitors of all ages.  Come see for yourself!

  • Puzzling Pond Critters at Aldo Leopold Nature Center 
    Saturday 7/21 9:30-11 am $5
    This easy trek will take you to the pond where we'll see some of its residents!  Aldo Leopold Nature Center naturalists will show you how to use nets and bug boxes to catch and identify the critters that live, breathe and eat underwater.

  • Cranes of the World at International Crane Foundation 
    Saturday 7/21 10:30-12 pm $5
    Get hands-on information, instruction and inspiration to engage the whole family in the conservation of cranes and the ecosystems on which they depend. Through cranes, you can learn concepts that apply to other species, and to environmental conservation as a whole. Get up close and personal with some of ICF's cranes from around the world and take an easy hike on the surrounding restored prairie.

  • Searching for Dragons at UW Arboretum 
    Saturday 7/28 2-3:30 pm $5
    Take an easy, guided trek to the hidden ponds and wetlands of the Arboretum to track down elusive and high-flying dragonflies in their natural habitat.  Learn why dragonflies are important to the wetland eco-system and some of the tricks they use in survival.

  • Sunset & Moonset at UW Arboretum 
    Tuesday 8/14 7:30-8:30 pm $5
    Come catch a glimpse of the moonset this night, scheduled to occur just after the sunset. With a waxing crescent visible until just before 9pm, you can hike by the light of the moon until darkness falls and the wonders of night sounds and nocturnal animals are unveiled.

General Information about Eco-Trekking

Programs will be conducted rain or shine (with alternate activities substituted during inclement weather). Comfortable walking shoes and drinking water are recommended. Parent(s) must attend with child. Fee amount is based on per person attendance. 

How to Register

If you wish to attend any of the Nature Net Eco-Treks, please register through MSCR by using one of the following methods:

Registration begins March 12, 2007 for Madison Residents and March 24 for general public.

What is MSCR

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is a public recreation provider for the residents of Madison (within the boundaries of the Madison Metropolitan School District). MSCR is a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District and has been providing recreation services for 80 years! MSCR has a wide range of recreation programs and services for all ages, that are offered year-round.  Nature Net is happy to partner with MSCR in offering these fun and engaging Eco-Treks.
